| Event: | Cambridge Academicals v Cambridge Dons |
| | Bury Chess League Division 1 |
| Venue: | Cambridge |
| Date: | 28/09/2005 |
| Report: | Philip Fallon |
| | Black | | White |
| 1 | Philip Fallon | ½ - ½ | Simon Doherty |
| 2 | Simon White | 1 - 0 | Oliver Lenton |
| 3 | Ole Bay-Peterson | 1 - 0 | Colin Byrne |
| 4 | John Melford | 1 - 0 | Gerard McGlew |
After arriving late, Doherty played solidly on board 1, and an attempt by black to win a pawn only led to a drawn endgame. Board 2 was a livelier affair, in which Simon out-played his opponent in the middlegame of a classical King's Gambit; White finishing with a sacrifice to give back-row mate. Board 4 saw the Dons captain gradually overcome Melford in a Sicilian to level the match situation. On board 3, a slow English opening gradually picked-up pace to see Ole Bay-Petersen break through against his opponent's king. Colin only escaped at material cost, and when Colin blundered a further rook in extreme time-trouble, the Academicals clinched the match by a point.
