Chess Workshops

Published 13th October 2006

Following the successful talk by Harriet Hunt earlier this year, the chess club has decided to organise some more chess training sessions. The idea is to provide an opportunity for our members to discuss and analyse games together and learn from each other's experience.

These workshops will be free of charge and open to all, and the workshops will not follow-on from each other so you will be able to attend any of the sessions according to your availability. The chess training is a new initiative for us, so please support the sessions if you can and provide useful suggestions on how we can improve them. (Please note that the training sessions may clash with Roger Goldsmith fixtures; players from Roger Goldsmith teams are asked to give priority to those matches.)

The first workshop will take place on 1st November. We'll divide ourselves into small groups (i.e. 3 or 4 members of varying playing strength per group). A series of instructive middle game positions will be set up, and each group will study the positions, discuss amongst themselves and come up with a suggested plan. We will also give some alternative plans for each position and ask each team to pick the plan they think is best. Points are awarded to teams for choosing good plans, and we may even end up with a winning team!

A second workshop is scheduled for 6th December - format to be announced.
