Cambridge City Chess Club - 2008 Town v Gown
Match Report
A little piece of history was made last week as Cambridge University Chess Club scored a convincing win in the 7th Annual Town vs Gown match.
The match was played against the City Chess Club over a full 20 boards, and the Gown supported the event by fielding six members of this year's Varsity chess team. With the Town missing a few of their top players, the University fairly hammered their advantage home over the top half of the match. Tariq, Andre and Richard Lee all managed a perfect 2/2, while Richard Newman was the only Town player to make a positive score on the top boards. The Town showed good strength in depth and was able to keep the score to a competitive 11½ - 8½ after round 1.
In the second round, the Town made a better showing on the top boards including a win for their Captain, Philip Fallon. However the University Captain, Julie Kourtseva, delivered a perfect match score of 2/2. A good second round performance on boards 11 - 20 meant the University were never in any danger of letting the victory out of their hands.
My thanks to everyone who took part and for making the evening such a fun and friendly event in the chess calendar.
Philip Fallon
