Cambridge City Chess Club - 2005 Town v Gown
Match Report
On Thursday 28th April the annual Town v Gown chess match took place at Cambridge City Chess Club. Some balancing of the team line-ups meant that a few City players with dual eligibility were transferred to the Gown team for a 17-a-side match.
The format was the same as in previous years, with each player playing two games against the same opponent - one with White and one with Black. The time limit for each game was 30 minutes per player.
After the first round there was still everything to play for with the Town narrowly leading by 9 points to 8 in a close fought match. The second round saw a repeat of the first round result, giving the Town an overall victory of 18 points to 16.
The Gown were more successful on the top boards, with noteworthy performances from Gustav Holzegel, Paul Davies and John Daugman who each won both of their games. But the Town's strength in depth ensured their overall success, with Andrew Herne, Ole Bay-Petersen, Ashley Stewart and Matthew Mills all scoring 2 out of 2.
