Cambridge City Chess Club - 2009 Town v Gown
Match Report
Cambridge University scored a stunning victory in this year's Town v Gown match. Building on last year's victory, the University again fielded six players from their Varsity team and included more strength-in-depth than ever seen before in this event.
Contested over 20 boards, the Town team was at least as strong as previous years, but they were simply brushed aside by an unstoppable University team. After round one, the University recorded a massive 14½ - 4½ lead. The Town were never likely to turn the match around after that. But things actually got worse for the Town as the University went on to win by an even bigger margin in round 2. In fact, only one Town player managed to get a positive score this year - well done Jean Bigras! The final score of 31 - 8 is the biggest winning margin ever in this event.
My thanks to everyone for again making the Town v Gown such an enjoyable event.
